Announcement of the 2025 GSTEP Challenge

We are thrilled to announce the commencement of the Ghana Science and Tech Explorer Prize (GSTEP) Programme 2025, providing Junior High Students with another exciting opportunity to showcase their talents and innovative ideas. Building on the success of previous years, this year will challenge participants to elevate their projects to the next level and make a substantial impact on sustainable technologies.

The application stage for GSTEP 2025 begins on 7th October and runs through to 4th November 2024.

The GSTEP Challenge is a thoughtfully crafted initiative designed to address the educational needs of the youth in Ghana by promoting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).

The programme is anchored on a challenge prize, inviting Junior High School (JHS) students between the ages of 11-18 in the Greater Accra, Eastern, and Ashanti Regions of Ghana to create a product or solution that utilises Science and Technology to contribute to a better society and their immediate communities. Students will have the opportunity to submit entries for the GSTEP challenge. After the initial selection process, 105 semi-finalists will be chosen, with 35 from each participating region. From this group, 45 finalists will be selected and provided with additional support to further develop their ideas.

The Ghana Science and Tech Explorer Prize (GSTEP) Challenge was officially launched on Tuesday, 14th June 2022 in Greater Accra at the GNAT Hall. Since its inception, it has successfully engaged and empowered young people across the Greater Accra, Eastern, and Ashanti regions of Ghana, fostering a culture of entrepreneurship and innovation.

The programme has delivered extensive assistance to participants, encompassing mentorship, coaching, and seed funding, to support them in refining their concepts into practical solutions. It has also coordinated industry exposure and skill enhancement, empowering participants with the requisite resources for translating their ideas into tangible implementations. An illustration of this success is exemplified by the recent victory of the 2023 GSTEP winners, the Global Engineering Technology (GET) Group from the John Wesley Methodist Basic School in Accra. Their achievement involved the development of an anti-sleep device for motorists, aimed at addressing the issue of road accidents in Ghana.

The GSTEP Programme has empowered Over 20,000 students with practical STEM education in just 2.5 years, fostering a new generation of innovators. 1,041 teachers have been trained in practical STEM education, enhancing their skills, and capacity and impacting thousands of students.

The GSTEP consortium appreciates all dignitaries, community leaders, stakeholders in the education sector, the private sector and the general public for their continued support. We eagerly anticipate your active participation in this exciting phase of the Ghana Science and Tech Explorer Prize Challenge. The GSTEP programme is being executed by the DreamOval Foundation and funded by Fondation Botnar.
